Interactive Noir Database – Cristian de la Garza & Carrie Johnson

Project proposal: Cristian de la Garza and Carrie Johnson

The concept for our project is to create an interactive website and database dedicated to exploring the world of film noir. The website will include various features such as an interactive timeline of film noir history, a database of film noir tropes, an interactive map of film noir locations, and a discussion forum for visitors to engage with each other about their favorite films and share recommendations.

The primary thesis of this project is to explore the ways in which film noir has influenced the culture and artistic landscape over the past century by providing a comprehensive resource for film lovers and scholars alike, the website will highlight the enduring impact of film noir on our understanding of cinema and popular culture.

In terms of form, we believe that an interactive website is the most appropriate for this project. (Using squarespace.com and its features such as links, gallery layout, embedding maps and timelines, etc.) By creating a dynamic and engaging platform that allows users to explore and interact with the content in various ways, we can foster a sense of community around the topic of film noir and encourage deeper engagement with the subject matter.

One of the main challenges in creating this project will be gathering the necessary resources and materials to create an accurate and comprehensive database of film noir tropes and locations. This will require extensive research into the history of film noir, as well as collaboration with film scholars and experts in the field. Additionally, we will need to create a user-friendly interface that allows visitors to easily navigate and engage with the content on the website. Another challenge that we imagine running into will be finding a way to embed interactive maps and timelines to our website which we researched is possible through squarespace.com.

To overcome these challenges, we plan to leverage online resources such as academic articles, film archives, and other relevant databases to gather information and build out the website’s content. We will reach out to scholars and experts in the field of film studies to gather feedback and insights on the project as it progresses.

In terms of scheduling, we plan to have a timeline to ensure that the project is completed by the due date. This will involve setting specific goals for each phase of the project, such as research, content creation, and website development. By breaking down the project down to manageable chunks and setting achievable deadlines, we are confident that we can successfully complete this project on time and to a high standard.

Excellent proposal – I appreciate you keeping the bar high. 🙂

There is definitely a question of scope here that you’ll need to grapple with. For example, if the topic is “film noir over the past century”, I’m not sure how you’ll generate anything of substance before the end of the semester, right, even with both of you working on it. Like take a look at this similar project: https://www.noirdb.com/. Just browsing through, it’s like “a mile wide and an inch deep” in terms of info: tons of films in the alphabetical list, but each entry is just basic imdb info and maybe a link to where you can see it. Nice for some uses, but not great for others.

I’d recommend seriously considering narrowing the focus of this database so each entry can have a little more depth, even if that’s at the expense of breadth. Do you have a direction like that you might focus on?
