Final Project AB for Cris & Carrie

“Film Noir.” Films, https://www.filmsite.org/filmnoir.html#:~:text=Film%20noir%20first%20evolved%20in,of%20Evil%20(1958)).

  • What drew Cris & I to this source is the extensive explanation along with the timeline format which is a concept we want to include in our interactive website.
  • The key insights are the pinpoints of when film noir first began and its origins along with the site’s major descriptions of moods and storylines seen in film noir.

“Film Noir.” TV Tropes, https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FilmNoir.

  • Along with our timeline, we also want to include the tropes of film noir – a sort of, here is where film noir was during the times, and here is what was included/portrayed in the films.
  • What key insights from this site that are applicable to our project are the many, many uses of film examples for the relevant tropes for understanding film noir. Also of good use is that the article, when explaining a concept, has links that lead to further explanation, so the database is full of credible sources.

“Filmsnoir.net.” FilmsNoir.Net, https://filmnoir.art.blog/.

  • We were drawn to this because it’s a very anonymous and kept in depth website about different collections of film noir, and it feels more credible to our argument by not just including the scholarly world but personal examples of the effects of film noir.
  • The key insight into this is the outlook of reasonings for different collections, as well as the lack of reasoning. The mystery behind the site fits so well with the mood of film noir.

“Go on Location: Film Noir Locations in Los Angeles.” Discover Los Angeles, https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/things-to-do/go-on-location-film-noir-locations-in-los-angeles.

  • This source was drawn to because it is a fun list of film noir locations in LA. By including tangible, specific places that films took place in, film noir feels more concrete and understood because of the community that the place of creation took place in.
  • The listing of specific locations is a key insight because it explains why shots may have been filmed the specific way they were based on location, and therefore, movies can be talked about in even further depth.

“Noir Resources.” Film Noir Resources, https://www.filmnoirfoundation.org/resources.html.

  • Drawn to this site simply by the motherload of resources it offers. The click of a link leads to so much information.
  • The key insight is how organized this is and what it can provide in our website having different areas to click around in order to learn about film noir.

Reft, Ryan. “When Film Noir Reflected an Uneasy America.” KCET, 20 Jan. 2021, https://www.kcet.org/arts-culture/when-film-noir-reflected-an-uneasy-america.

  • Because this site talks about the past of film noir and focuses on America, we were drawn to this because it isn’t just about film noir but about the country, too.
  • The key insights are the discussions and historical insights about America and how these situations and moments impacted film noir.

“Film Noir and Contemporary America.” Film Noir And Contemporary America < Does Film Noir Mirror The Culture Of Contemporary America? – Lise Hordnes < General < Essays < American History From Revolution To Reconstruction and Beyond, http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/essays/general/does-film-noir-mirror-the-culture/film-noir-and-contemporary-america.php.

  • The title is what hooked us to use this for a source – “Film Noir and Contemporary America,” as this is what one of the focuses is for the project.
  • A key insight for this piece: “Film noir can be seen as both a screen style, and a perspective on human existence and society,” and this statement is one that will be a central idea.

“Film Noir.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 6 Apr. 2023, https://www.britannica.com/art/film-noir.

  • We were drawn to this by trying to find a substantial scholarly source for our work that includes research from an array of information.
  • The key insights are the topics it goes over – noir women, the lighting, the legacy.

“Film Noir.” Film Noir : Free Movies : Free Download, Borrow and Streaming : Internet Archive, https://archive.org/details/Film_Noir.

  • Internet Archive, the site that offers so many free sources, has an entire list dedicated to film noir. This will be incredibly useful as it offers an outlet for us to find and use films for our own usage,
  • The key insight is the vast movie collection offered for our viewing.

“Video Series: Getting Started with Squarespace.” Squarespace Help Center, https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205809798-Video-Series-Getting-Started-with-Squarespace.

  • In creating a website, we must first know the ins and outs of doing so, especially something interactive. So, by having this site and instructions, we will be better prepared for our final project.
  • The key insight is a step by step series that allows us to learn how we want to make our website the best it can be.

Specific Films:

  • The Maltese Falcon (1941)
  • Double Indemnity (1944)
  • Act of Violence (1948) vs The Stranger (1946)
  • Blade Runner (2017)
  • Nightcrawler (2014)
  • Taxi Driver (1976)
  • AND MORE

Some solid sources here – filmsite.org is always a good starting place, like Wikipedia ++; the film noir foundation will probably be useful. But there are also some limited-to-no-use sources here too, like Britannica. (Also, I love TV Tropes for fun, but I’m not sure I would cite it as a source. I *would* use it as a case study and/or example in my argument though. 🙂
