For my project I want to take a deep dive into the nihilism theme in noir films. This theme is constant in the genre and is one that continues to be present in today’s films. My thesis is that nihilism is demonstrated in the noir film’s characters, setting, and lighting. I will definitely be expanding more on the topic in my final project. I think that the best way to go about this would be in a video essay but since I don’t have the software or pro video editing skills, I am considering a podcast alongside a zine with crucial visuals. (Especially since of one my main focuses are on chiaroscuro lighting- visuals will for sure be needed)
I will need to reference the library online database to help conduct my extensive research. Finding material on this topic will not be a challenge, as there is a lot of knowledge out there about it already. I will need to expand my list of films that I can reference to provide my audience with more examples, as well as expanding my knowledge and understanding of the genre. I plan on doing this in the week following the proposal. After that I will need to set a realistic and manageable timeline to keep myself accountable in order to get my project edited and completed on time.
Intriguing concept for a topic and format. 🙂 I’ll be interested to see how each informs the other as the project progresses.
